CNCCookbook: Be a Better CNC'er

Other Machines Home

I hate to discriminate and put all of these useful things under the "Other" machines, because they are essential. But they are ancillary at best, and hold little interest beyond their immediate tasks.

Widgitmaster CNC Mini-Router

This is a hugely entertaining little machine, and was my first finished CNC machine. It was very easy to get it going, the page gives full details. It's capacity is limited to 8" x 4" x 2" and whatever is amenable to carving/routing/milling/drilling with a Dremel tool.

This machine would make a killer RepRap-style 3D printer with the right extruder head, so I may bring it back to life in that guise.

Blanch: The Baby Blanchard Surface Grinder

Hello, Blanch!

Band Saw: Harbor Freight 4" x 6" Metal Cutting Bandsaw $41.00 Used on eBay

Someday, maybe mine will look this nice and clean!

I was very tempted to go for a larger capacity fixed or vertical bandsaw rather than this smaller saw, but I was coming off the rebound having lost on buying a metal lathe on eBay and saw this was closing in 3 minutes. For $41 it's hard to go wrong!

This machine served me well for several years before being superceded by the DeWalt Multicutter (see below). Even then I made a table for it and used it to cut irregular shapes. Ultimately, it was completely superceded by a nice industrial Delta Bandsaw I bought.

DeWalt Multicutter: A Poor Man's Cold Saw?

This saw works so well I have not used my HF 4 x 6 bandsaw since. It is fast (the big chunk of aluminum you see there is about a 30 second cut) and leaves a very clean finish. These saws were about $400 when I bought mine, and are ideal for the home shop machinist or welder. I have just about worn out the blade on my over the years, and it cuts more slowly than it used to. I am going to take it to a local blade sharpener and see if they can renew it. If not, I'll just buy another blade.
