# AGENTS.md - USFWS proposed critical habitat

Guidance for AI agents and LLMs working with this collection.

## Overview

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed Endangered Species Act critical habitat features (70; one feature per listed entity, `entity_id`). The GIS files are not the legal source for the boundaries (the Federal Register is); many unit attributes read 'Please check current species specific shapefile'. Mostly terrestrial and freshwater; kept whole because the layer is the first-15 list's FWS critical habitat entry.

## Find a place

`place_id` is unique and prefixed; `status` / `status_source` / `status_date` say whether the place is current and
where that is documented. Check `status` before treating a lease or area as live.

## Render on a map

Load `places.pmtiles` (layer `fws_critical_habitat_proposed`) into MapLibre GL via the PMTiles protocol; `styles/default.json` is a starting style.
