6 God Made Everything: Ages 3 and 4 Developed with the Whole Child in Mind Based on Best Practices The developmental needs of three- and four-year-olds help shape the “best practices” approach for learning in the God Made Everything program. RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Early experiences have profound ef fects on learning. Each activity is Christ-centered to awaken children to an awareness of God’s love and our Catholic faith, Tradition, culture, and identity. CHALLENGE Learning advances when children are challenged. The program presents essential faith concepts in a simple and clear way. ENGAGEMENT Young children learn in a variety of ways. This program gives catechists myriad instructional tools including songs, rhymes, chants, finger plays, drawing, dancing, crafting, producing artworks, role-play, games, quiet-time prayer, and reflection. FLEXIBILITY Children learn at varying rates. Lessons can be customized for children who are at early, intermediate, and advanced stages of development.

ACTIVE LEARNING Activity promotes language, cognitive development, and social and emotional development. Young children learn through getting up and moving. With this program, children get up and move, and therefore love to learn! MOTIVATION Children’s experiences shape their motivation. Sacred Scripture and Catholic Tradition are presented through inviting text, engaging activities, and bright, beautiful art that motivate children. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS Young children develop more freely when they have secure relationships with classmates and adults. The activities in the program are designed to create a caring community— helping children know that their parish family is one on which they can rely now and for a lifetime. SELFDISCIPLINE Through guidance and practice, young children can develop the selfregulatory capacities. Integral to this program are routines and an introduction to the rituals of our Catholic faith. Reverent behavior and active listening are modeled and practiced. Ready to Order? Contact Customer Service at 800-621-1008 or customerservice@loyolapress.com 7

Children discuss the picture and listen to adapted Scripture: God saw everything he made and called it very good. They connect Scripture to the idea that God made everything in the world, and he lets us make things too. Children learn a finger play called “What God Made,” discuss God’s creation and their own ability to create, and then complete an art project using page 66. They take home their completed project and do the Family Time activities with a parent or other family member. 65 UNIT 4 • CHAPTER 19 • I Can Make Things Name 66 AGE 3 • God Made Me © For more family resources, refer to the Family Activity Booklet and visit www.loyolapress.com/pre-k. Display Chapter 19 of the God Made Me Big Book. Read aloud the Faith Focus and invite children to answer the question on the page. Take some time to discuss the pages, teaching faith concepts and cross-curricular extensions as you go. • Listen to what the Bible says: [Turn to Genesis 1:31 in the Bible as marked by the Scripture Card.] “God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good.” • God is very good. God lets us make things too. 2 Teach the following poem with motions: What God Made God made the sun and the great blue sky. [Make a circle with arms; separate arms and raise hands.] God made the stars and the moon. [Open and close fingers.] God made lakes and birds that fly. [Flap arms.] God made the little raccoon. [Make circles with fingers around eyes.] God made mountains and green, grassy hills. [Make a peak with hands.] God made the fish in the sea. [Put palms together and wiggle hands forward.] God made flowers like daffodils. [Pretend to smell flower.] But best of all, God made me! [Point to self.] Mary Kathleen Glavich, S.N.D. SHARING [B] 3 Talk about our role in creation. • God lets us make things to make the world more beautiful. We can build bridges and buildings. We can plant flowers and trees. We can make beautiful pictures. • God wants us to take good care of what he has made. How can you care for our world? (Keep it clean. Don’t hurt the flowers or trees.) I Can Make Things CHAPTER 19 T127 65 UNIT 4 • CHAPTER 19 • I Can Make Things Name 2 Have the children make funny faces. Give each child a sheet of paper or cardstock. Have children gather several felt shapes. Model for the children, using the larger circle as a face and adding eyes, ears, a nose, and a mouth. Once children have created their felt faces, help them glue the pieces to the paper or cardstock. Admire all the silly faces, perhaps hanging them on the wall or giving them to the children to take home. SHARING [A] 1 SCRIPTURE Distribute page 65 and talk about the picture. BEFORE YOU BEGIN 1. God the Father created everything out of nothing. Merely by willing their existence, God called all things into being. Now we, God’s children, are the inheritors of God’s handiwork. The universe and its treasures are ours to use and enjoy. Their care is in our hands. Whenever we beautify the world or make something with its materials, we share somewhat in God’s great act of creation. We experience the joy of using our minds and bodies to bring about something new. 2. Through making things, children improve their handeye coordination and fine and gross motor skills. The children can also express their feelings and thoughts and demonstrate their unique talents. CENTERING 1 Gather the children in a circle for Joy Alive time. Play the Unit 4 song (Track 4). Invite the children to do motions along with you, using Joy Alive pages T254–T255. LEARNING OUTCOMES The children will • explain that God the Father made everything. • show satisfaction in making things. • What are the children doing? (making sand castles, digging in the sand) • What have you ever made out of sand, mud, or clay? • Did you enjoy making a felt face? • It’s fun to make things. Do you know who makes the best things? (God) • What things in the picture did God make? (the sun, clouds, water, sand, birds, tree, children) • [Show the Bible.] The Bible tells us that God made everything—all the animals and flowers in the world. Tail Tail H AGE 3 • God Made Me © Name 4 Teach the children to make a paper chain. Cut one-inch by two-inch strips of different colors of construction paper. Help children write things they can make or do on one side of the strips, and have them draw a picture on the other side. Then have them roll the first strip and tape it closed to make a circle. Taking another color, have them insert the strip through the circle they made and tape the new one closed. Once each child has three or four links, have the children connect the chains to make one big chain. • Look what we can do! ENRICHING THE FAITH EXPERIENCE Use the following activities to enrich the lesson or to replace an activity with one that better meets the needs of your group. 1 Give the children modeling clay or sand to make simple things, such as mountains and snakes. 2 Have the children make a train out of large cartons or blocks. 3 Hang an old sheet on a wall, with newspapers protecting the floor, or hang the sheet outside. Give the children spray bottles filled with colored water and have them paint the sheet. 5 Make a class “aquarium.” Cut out fish of different shapes and sizes and have children color them using paints, crayons, or markers. Put large blue poster boards on the wall, and as you pin the children’s colored fish to them, have the children tell whether each one is smaller or larger than the one you just pinned. Discuss the many pretty colors in your class aquarium. I Can Make Things CHAPTER 19 T129 Head Head CHAPTER 19 • I Can Make Things H 3 Gather the children in a circle for Joy Alive time. Play the Unit 4 song (Track 4). Invite the children to do motions along with you, using Joy Alive pages T254–T255. Have the children take home their pages and show their family the Family Time section. CHECKPOINT • Were the learning outcomes achieved? • Do the children concentrate well on tasks? 2 Help the children make the dog from Perforated Card H by following these directions: • Fold the card so the dog stands. • Glue on the head by connecting the two blue head circles. • Glue on the tail by connecting the two orange tail circles. • Name the dog and write the name on the dog tag. If you plan to teach Chapter 20 next and wish to use the children’s baby pictures, contact parents (or send notes home) asking them to provide pictures. (“For [name]’s family . . . ”) Have the children respond, “We thank you, God.” 8 Direct the children to finish drawing the bouquet on page 6. 6 SCRIPTURE Have the children look at page 6. Discuss the Holy Family. • Does anyone know the family in the picture? (the Holy Family: God’s Son, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) • God’s Son, Jesus, loves us and showed us how to live. Jesus belonged to a family as you do. His mother was Mary, and the father in his family was Joseph. They all loved one another very much. • What do you think Jesus did to show Mary and Joseph that he loved them? (He helped them, obeyed them, and gave them gifts.) • This is the Riley family. The members of the family love one another. They care for one another. Each member does many things to help the family. 3 Suggest or have the children suggest what each member of the Riley family does to help the family. Have the children stand and pantomime the actions. Examples: • Mr. Riley: drives the family to church, cooks, washes clothes • Mrs. Riley: irons clothes, cuts the grass • Patty: sets the table, folds the clothes • Joe: puts away the clothes, feeds the dog 4 Ask the children what they do to show love for their family members. SHARING [B] 5 Distribute page 5 and talk about the picture. • What families do you see in the picture? (human beings, birds, rabbits, squirrels, butterflies, ducks, fish) • The little squirrel belongs to the squirrel family. The fish belongs to the fish family. The children in the picture belong to a human family. You belong to a family too. God Made My Family CHAPTER 2 T13 5 UNIT 1 • CHAPTER 2 • God Made My Family Name SHARING [A] 1 Let the children tell about their families. [Option: Show a family photo and tell about it.] Say: • God the Father gave each of us a family. Who are the people in your family? • What are some things that you do together with your family at home? • Who cooks the meals? • Where do you go together? • Isn’t God good to give us people to live with? 2 Introduce the Riley family (Cutouts: #1, father; #2, mother; #3, Patty; #4, Joe). CENTERING 1 As the children enter the room, help them find their name tags. Gather the children in a circle for Joy Alive time. Play the Unit 1 song (Track 1). Invite the children to do motions along with you, using Joy Alive pages T266–T267. 2 Have the children play house in small groups. Allow them to choose their own roles. BEFORE YOU BEGIN 1. Ideally, God’s love is communicated to children through their parents and other family members. Reflecting on their families enhances children’s sense of identity as individuals and as part of a family. It prepares them for taking their place in the wider family of the Christian community. 2. Children may enjoy talking about their homes and families, the only world many children have known before beginning preschool. During discussion, be sensitive to the needs of children who come from nontraditional families. Remember too that some children are looking for someone to accept them and give them attention. LEARNING OUTCOMES The children will • explain how family members love and help one another. • state that God’s Son, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are the Holy Family. • express appreciation for what individual family members do for them. • express a desire to show love and concern for their family members. T12 UNIT 1 God Made People CHAPTER 2 God Made My Family A A. Clear lesson objectives and catechetical background are included. B. Joy Alive music instruction is at point of use. C. ACTING 1 Distribute pages 7 and 8, “A Kitten’s Tale,” and have the children fold them in half to make a book. To review how family members help one another, read the book while the children follow the pictures. Then discuss the story: • What did Mrs. Cat do for her family in the story? (She hung a picture, comforted Kitty, helped look for the mitten, and knit a mitten.) • What did Mr. Cat do for the family? (He cooked, made tea for Kitty, and helped look for the mitten.) • What did Tom do? (He went out and looked for the mitten.) • In a family, everyone cares for everyone else. Kitty’s family tried to help her. They tried to make her feel better. • What did Kitty do for someone in her family? (She thanked her mother and gave her a hug.) How do you think her mother felt?
