What is the Math Fluency Builder?
The Math Fluency Builder generates targeted practice for fraction operations. One click produces a problem set that flows into four instructional formats — flash cards, a printable practice sheet, discussion prompts, and a step-by-step guided presentation — so a single set of numbers can power your warm-up, whole-class lesson, discourse routine, and independent practice.
Every set is generated from a seed. Share a student link and every student sees exactly the same problems you see — the set is reproducible forever from that link.
Instructional stance
Use the app to build both fluency and reasoning. Students should become more accurate and efficient, and should also be able to explain why procedures work and compare multiple strategies.
Getting started in 5 steps
- Choose a grade preset from the top-left — it sets difficulty and denominator ranges automatically.
- Select an operation and number set (fractions or mixed numbers) in the left panel.
- Pick a mode using the tabs.
- Click Generate Set.
- Print, copy a student link, or go Full Screen depending on how you're using it.
Pro tip
Run all four modes on the same topic in one lesson — model with Presentation, talk with Discussion, then send students to a Practice Sheet. Only the mode changes.
The Four Modes
Flash Cards
Quick fluency practice, best at 8–12 problems for warm-ups, partner review, and rapid recall. Navigate with ← →, reveal with Space. The optional card timer keeps pacing brisk. In student mode, flash cards also carry the self-check buttons that power completion codes.
Practice Sheet
Independent written practice (10–20 problems) for seatwork, homework, intervention, or quick checks. Includes name/date header, optional class/period line, a reflection prompt, and an answer key on its own page. See Printing & A/B Versions for test security.
Discussion
Student discourse and reasoning. A useful flow: display the prompt, give 20–30 seconds of quiet think time, collect one strategy and revoice it in mathematical language, invite a second strategy or respectful challenge, then name the key idea the class surfaced. Prompts are launching points, not scripts.
Guided Presentation
Whole-class modeled instruction with step-by-step reveals (Reveal Next Step / Back Step). Hidden steps hold their space so the layout never jumps. The annotation toolbar (pen, line, rectangle, eraser, laser dot) lets you mark up the problem live; ink clears when you change problems.
Settings Reference
| Setting | What it does |
| Grade preset | One-click difficulty and denominator ranges tuned by grade band. |
| Operation / Number set | Which operation students practice, on fractions or mixed numbers. |
| Difficulty | Controls denominator relationships and regrouping demands. |
| Min / Max denominator | Bounds for generated denominators. |
| Answer format | Whether answers must be simplified. |
| Regrouping | Require, avoid, or mix regrouping in mixed-number work. |
| Question format / Image style | Numeric, image-only, or mixed; and which visual model images use. |
| Student header / Class / Reflection | Worksheet header lines and an end-of-sheet reflection prompt. |
| Card timer | Optional per-card countdown in Flash Cards — off by default, and pacing stays in your hands. |
| Answer key | Show or hide the key page on practice sheets. |
| Worksheet versions | Single, or A & B — two different sets printed together for test security. |
Good to know
Changing most settings regenerates the set with fresh numbers. The A/B toggle is the exception — it re-renders without discarding your current problems.
Student Links & Assignments
Copy Student Link
Copies a URL that opens this exact problem set in a clean student view — no teacher controls, no discussion scaffolding, no answer leakage. The link encodes your settings and the set's seed, so it shows precisely the problems on your screen now, and will forever.
Assignment Builder
- Generate a set and click Copy Student Link — the link lands in the matching slot of the Build Assignment drawer automatically.
- Switch modes and copy again to fill more slots. Different modes can even use different generated sets.
- Add a title and directions, then Copy Assignment to Clipboard and paste into Google Classroom or Schoology.
Student view
Preview what students will see by opening any copied link yourself — the interface strips down to just the activity.
Completion Codes
Completion codes give you a lightweight accountability loop for flash card practice — no accounts, no grading platform.
What students experience
In the student link, each flash card shows ✓ Got it / ✗ Missed it buttons. Students work each card, reveal the answer, and mark themselves. When every card is marked, a completion panel appears with their score and a short code (like FB1-K3M2P-7A-A-F) to copy and submit wherever you collect work.
What you do with the code
Open Build Assignment and paste the code into Check a Completion Code. You'll see the self-reported score, the percentage, and exactly which card numbers were missed — so you can pull up those problems for reteaching. Mistyped or altered codes are rejected by a checksum.
Honest framing
This is self-reported, honor-system data — closer to an exit ticket than an assessment. Its value is the conversation it starts: "You missed cards 3 and 7 — let's look at those together."
Printing & A/B Versions
What prints from where
In Practice Sheet mode, Print produces the worksheet plus the answer key on its own page (if the key is on). In other modes, Print produces flash cards with an answer list at the end — ready to cut for stations or partner drills.
A & B versions
Set Worksheet versions to A & B and the sheet preview shows two complete versions — different problems, same settings and difficulty — each starting on its own page with its own answer key. Hand alternating versions to adjacent students. Version B is derived from your set's seed, so regenerating the same set always reproduces the same B.
Photocopier-safe
Fraction visuals print in solid dark shading so a black-and-white copy conveys the same information as the screen.
Quick Reference
Keyboard shortcuts
| ← / → | Previous / next problem (all card modes) |
| Space | Reveal or hide the answer |
| Esc | Exit full screen / close this guide |
Fast workflows
- 5-minute warm-up: Generate 8 problems → Full Screen → flash cards with choral or whiteboard responses.
- Homework in 60 seconds: Generate → Copy Student Link → paste in Google Classroom. Add "submit your completion code" for accountability.
- Quiz day: Practice Sheet mode → Worksheet versions: A & B → Print.
- Reteach: Check a student's completion code, note the missed cards, and walk those problems in Guided Presentation.
Things worth knowing
- Student links are permanent — the seed reproduces the set exactly, any time.
- For deeper facilitation support — discussion scripts, likely student responses, teacher moves by problem category — see the companion Teacher's Guide document.
