Meteor Garden vs. Meteor Garden : An Opinion! Friends, I have gone through the delightful journey of completing Meteor Garden last month on Netflix. I remember chancing upon it pretty randomly, as I have never watched Chinese dramas before. Maybe because of that, I had bookmarked some K-dramas on Netflix, enabling MG to turn up as a suggestion. Suffice it to say, fell in love with MG ! By then, learnt enough to know that there was an original version waiting to be consumed by me :D finished it today.
I think people are misunderstanding who Shan Cai is supposed to be in this version. They were going for a more real approach to the story this time. Shan Cai has had 0 love interactions before the story of Meteor Garden.
She is literally like a middle schooler when it comes to her aptitude for love. She's awkward when kissing, she has trouble expressing herself, she is very innocent. I dont think shen yue did much wrong, if you watch the BTS for some parts, it seems that the director was pushing for this awkward Shan Cai.
I also believe hard core that people feel weird watching this because of how the dubbed chinese sounds. The only version of MG available to watch is all dubbed over to have perfect mandarin because of censorship laws in china so the voices dont match up to the setting for a scene and straight up dont match the meteor garden pictures daoming si quat movement at some points, meteor garden pictures daoming si quat.
If we ever get the undubbed version released online by tencent, I think a lot of the vocal awkwardness will be remedied. Idk, I personally believe that shen yue did a great job with portraying Shan Cai as an 18 year old, first year college student who has never had a boyfriend or has ever been in love. People don't seem to understand that the whole show takes place in a little over a year.
And almost half the show, Shan Cai is unsure of her feelings and then when she starts to understand them, she becomes afraid to admit them because Ah Si's mom gets involved. Put yourself in her shoes. It wasn't until the cooking comp that we really see her start to show affection for. Then they go strong until eps 20 where Si's mom gets involved.
Then they go back and forth never really admitting feels to eachother or truly ever dating. We have eps 30 the necklace being thrown episode where we finally see Shan Cai come to terms with how much she loves Si but is unable to vocalize it. Then you once again have them going back and forth between being together and "breaking up" at which point one of them would run after the.
Essentially until they get married, they are never in a steady relationship with each other for longer than a month.
Everytime they get together, something happens and one of them gets super hurt and depressed Xiao Zi being introduced, Shan Cai leaving for her friends, Ah Si leaving for London and breaking it off. It isn't until the Hunger strike that they actually stay together, and by that point, you have 4 episodes left, meteor garden pictures daoming si quat. This is a whole new perspective on the show and I really appreciate. Thank you very much! I think I can also agree on a lot of things you said. I guess what stood out to me in MG was why Shancai even put up with Ah Si in the initial episodes if she disliked him and never even thought about him romantically or non romantically. On the other handin MGwhen they keep showing what Shancai is thinking when observing Ah si, you can see her progressively being curious, interested and finally liking.

I honestly can't think of the moment where I truly saw her love begin, even of she didn't know it. It definitely isn't perfect, I still take the show with a grain of salt. But if you don't think about the beginning too much, the rest of the show ultimately does fall into place and make sense when you think of it how I explained it. Yup that's true. Yup I tried some third party sites and the quality is the same as YouTube. Someone on reddit did mention though that some scenes etc are missing from YouTube ones not sure if true. I don't think I missed any scene though but just letting you know :. I honestly didn't enjoy that much because I just didn't understand a lot of Si's development or Shancai's so much confusing back and forth about whether Shancai even considered him a friend or what not.
I couldn't bear to watch the version because it seems so outdated to me. I became a bigger fan after watching their behind the scenes. I'm proud of you for being able to watch the version.
After completing the version multiple times I enjoy crying apparently I decided to try the original. Well i couldn't make it past the first episode. First of all the quality was awful, ShanCais parents were awful and basically all of their acting was terrible, meteor garden pictures daoming si quat, imo. Clearly in they picked the most attractive actors they could find whereas the version was a whole mess of different faces and body types and the likes.
I mean Daoming Si looked like he was well passed college at that point. I remember bawling the first time I watched it. It was just so heartbreaking! I agree that some scenes were awkward and out of place but overall I thought it was a great. I totally agree with You! Haha i know what you mean. But honestly it's the quality that holds us all.

Hope you're watching on Netflix now that it's available on it in way better quality than anywhere. So surprised. Indian Netflix normally gets shows later than other countries. Does some other provider in the USA hold the rights to meteor garden ? You should totally check the Japanese version! I watched all of them and Japanese one is my favorite. Will check it. Here's my comparison of the two versions basically, brain dump hehe : Shancai : One of the things that pissed me off about MG was Shancai's portrayal by actress Shen Yu. It felt so wooden sometimes, her eyes seemingly lifeless and glass-like i. To be honest, it seemed to me till then that she was basically being forced into it - especially with Daoming Si being around always and helping her out of situations she got herself into like saving her from frost bite.
It also doesn't help that she doesn't show much gratitude for. The kissing scenes, the less said the better. Her acting is superb. I think the only scenes in which Shen Yu did better were the crying scenes the scene when she goes looking for the necklace in the pond and the talking-through-the-door scene. I was moved to tears in MG but not so much in MG Could also be possible that it was because I saw MG first and so impact was morebut just saying.
Why are your eyes wide open when kissing? Why do you look surprised every time? There's almost a long build up to each one anyway that you should be seeing it coming.
