Measure the length of the string. To get your rise, all you have to do is measure the stake that is at your low point all the way from the string straight down to the ground. The goal here is to change the angle of the slope. Never know what to plant together? Once you are panked and tamped and out of breath, you can get a drink of water, because you are done grading your yard. Well, almost.

To get the slope you would have to measure the horizontal distance, which you did by the level and string that I imagine went to a stick at the low point or something similar but you also need the vertical distance.
Which would be the distance from the ground to the level string, measured from the low point. The ground looks level but in reality it varies slightly at various points. I never done this myself. I have used a bucket with water and a tube to level an area. Just thought to clarify what you did. I never knew that when grading your lawn, you want to get water to slope away from the house and to the left!
